Houston often feels overwhelming. On any day of the week you can catch a museum exhibition in the morning, go gallery-hopping in the afternoon, attend a poetry reading in the evening, and finish the day with some late-night jazz. But as anyone who’s wasted a day at Ikea knows, too many choices can be paralyzing. Faced with endless options, it’s often easier to stay home and watch TV.

That’s where we come in. We sift through the hundreds of cultural events that occur every week to bring you the coolest and quirkiest. Each weekday we’ll feature a single, stand-out event, as well as five or six additional recommendations. A red “Editor’s Pick” flag next to an event signals our stamp of approval. Events listed in our magazine are also on this website, supplemented by all other events for which we have information. The magazine listings aim at selectivity, the online listings at comprehensiveness. If you’d like us to consider your event for inclusion, or if you notice an error in one of our listings, please e-mail us at listings@houstoniamag.com.

In addition to our picks, we’ll be posting daily blog updates with the latest cultural news and finds from across the city. We want our blog to be the homepage for every Houston arts lover and the launchpad for every night on the town. To that end, we welcome thoughtful comments from our readers. We’re also recruiting guest bloggers; if you’re passionate about the arts, send a story idea and a few writing samples to onthetown@houstoniamag.com.

See you on the town!
