Fashion designer Fotini stopped by Houston boutique Elizabeth Anthony Esther Wolf last week for a trunk show featuring a selection of pieces from her Fall 2013 collection, which was inspired by a 2001 visit to Russia's Romanov palaces. “One in particular that I fell in love with was Catherine’s palace and the amber room, which was exquisite. There were ten of us and you could hear a pin drop. It was breathtaking,” Fotini told Houstonia. “There was a lot of malachite throughout the palace, and that’s what inspired the print I have this season.”
That opulent inspiration is evident in the collection, which features designs such as a feather cape and a gown embellished with a silver snake. For the trunk show, Fotini kept her selections in more wearable territory without losing the drama: red leather, lace, and metallics. Her dream client? "A woman who is strong and confident. She likes to be noticed. It’s not minimal or understated.”
One such bold woman, Parks & Recreation star Amy Poehler, wore one of Fotini’s dresses for one of fashion’s most high profile nights: the annual Met Costume Institute Gala. “She loves new designers," said Fotini. "The story I received was that her stylist pulled a Givenchy, a Dior, and the Fotini gown. I heard at the very last minute that she had chosen and I said, ‘I’m not going to believe it until I see it.’” And see it she did: Poehler walked the red carpet a black leather Fotini gown complete with laser cut details, peplum, and a feather skirt. And yes, people noticed.
