As the homespun tale is told, after Lilly McKim married Peter Pulitzer, a son of the famous publishing family, she decided to set up a juice stand near their home in Palm Beach, Florida. Juice stand-running is apparently a messy business. Lilly had a dress made that would hide fruit juice stains and sold the brightly patterned dresses along with the juice. And that's how the socialite, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 81, accidentally became an iconic designer.

When you think of the classic 1960s shift dress, you're thinking of Lilly. Called the Queen of Prep, she created dresses that were simple and wearable in construction, yet loud and vivacious in pattern, almost to the point of kitsch. We chose some of our favorite dresses from the Lilly Pulitzer Spring 2013 collection, perfect for a Houston spring (taking into account the unpredictable weather, too.)
