For some years now, the most exciting television dramas have been on cable channels, most prominently HBO, Showtime and AMC. The Sundance Channel is entering the competition with an upcoming new original series from the producers of Breaking Bad, a big hit on AMC. The series is Rectify, and you can get a free sneak peek tonight at Sundance Cinemas Houston. Count it as one of the advantages of having a Sundance Cinemas theater in town.

Rectify centers on a man (Aden Young) who is freed by new DNA evidence after spending nearly 20 years on death row for a crime he did not commit - the rape and murder of his teenage girlfriend. With such a plotline, the quest for revenge would be a standard Hollywood theme, but Rectify seems to be aiming for more subtle drama. It's producers say the show is about the freed prisoner's troubled reentry into society, including his still-fearful small town and his conflicted family. Other stars include Abigail Spencer, Hal Holbrook and Clayne Crawford.
Rectify was created by Ray McKinnon, who wrote the upcoming Mud (starring Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon). The executive producers are Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein, who also are behind Breaking Bad.
The series premieres Monday, April 22 at 8 p.m. on the Sundance Channel. Tonight's free screening is at 7 p.m. It will be followed by a live-streamed Q&A with members of the cast. But you have to RSVP in order to attend: RSVPSundanceHouston@sundancechannel.com.
