Readings by noted authors, panels on writing and publishing, music, film and even yoga are on the agenda for the Houston Indie Book Festival this Saturday. The event will be held on the lawn of The Menil Collection.

Mat Johnson, the author of Pym, Drop and Hunting in Harlem as well as the comic books Incognegro and Dark Rain, will read from his work at 2 p.m. on the Menil Bookstore deck. Johnson, who teaches creative writing at the University of Houston, has won the John Dos Passos Prize for Literature and the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award.

Other participants include Derrick Brown and Jason Bayani, both poets, and UH creative writing professor Aaron Reynolds. Participants in the Houston Young Writers Reading Series also will read original poems, stories and essays. The event will include a puppet show for children and performances by Bootown Theater and the music groups Thomas Hulten and the Hot Viking Dixieland Band and the line upon line percussion group from Austin.
