While investigation into the five-alarm fire that killed four Houston firefighters focuses on the kitchen of a now-destroyed restaurant, Ray Salti, proprietor of Sorrel Urban Bistro, is trying to put his own kitchen to good use. The night after the fire, he and friends Penny Haber and Jenny Tavor were relaxing on Sorrel's patio, talking about the tragedy and wondering how to help. They landed on a plan to raise money for the families of the deceased—and fast, while the lost firefighters are still fresh in the public's mind.
"I asked the chef, what would you like to do?" Salti said. The result? Attendees of Sorrel's Sunday fundraiser will be treated to four food stations, with options including filet mignon and fresh fish from the Gulf. Representatives from wineries will be on hand to provide libations from different regions. Tickets are $100, and all the proceeds will be donated to the families of the four deceased firefighters through The 100 Club.
