Houston interior design blogger-turned-author Ronda Carman Rice has teamed up with a centuries old Scottish mill to create Ronda Carman Fine Fabrics, making hand-crafted fabrics and throws. We spoke to her about her exciting new creative collaboration.
You started out as an interior design blogger (All the Best), and now you have a book (Designers at Home, Rizzoli) and a fabric line. What’s your story?
After a shout-out from Domino magazine, my readership skyrocketed from a couple of views each day to more than 2,000 visitors. It was then I began interviewing designers and tastemakers. Before long I was profiling people that I had admired for years, such as Ivanka Trump and Tory Burch. I had that aha moment…I found my niche…and that is when All the Best really began.
For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to write a book. I have been collecting magazine clippings and tucking away book ideas since I was 12 years old. When I gave my mom and dad a copy of my book, my father commented, “It’s as if you have been preparing for this your whole life."
The fabric line features a lot of plaid. How do you envision it in different style homes? How can it fit with different decor?
Yes, we have a lot of tartan in the collection (a must for fabrics coming from Scotland). Our mill is over 230 years old and has over 1,000 tartans in their library....We also have cashmeres, sheers, sateens, wools, leathers, and men’s suiting fabric. Our collection is 350-plus fabrics, 80 leather color ways, and growing. Our mills also produce for Louis Vuitton, YSL, Fendi, Aston Martin, Jaguar, and Range Rover. It’s really very exciting.
What’s you favorite textile from your line and what’s the coolest way you’ve seen it applied?
I love our Stirling Collection. It’s all menswear-inspired, and it looks amazing when you upholster the walls!
Name your top three designers.
I can’t name just three…it’s like naming your favorite children. But a few Houston designers I am loving are Katie Stassi Scott, Ashley Goforth, Lucinda Loya, Sarah Eilers, Sandy Lucas, Julie Dodson, the Munger sisters (Amy and Elizabeth), Don Connelly…
Houston. Favorite restaurant? Favorite place to shop for clothes/ shoes? Favorite place to shop for home stuff?
Bistro Provence is my new favorite, I can never frequent Saks OFF 5th enough, and I love Mecox Gardens (Mac and Fred are the best).
