Like many grande dames who spend time in Uptown Park, Elizabeth Anthony was ready to get a little work done after a long and fruitful decade.

The store was launched as a formalwear and pageant destination by Julie Phillips Roberts in 1996— Elizabeth and Anthony are the middle names of her two children—and when Roberts bought iconic Houston store Esther Wolf, the concepts merged to create Elizabeth Anthony | Esther Wolf in 2003.

A little over a decade later, the departure of David Brown Flowers from the adjacent storefront gave Roberts the opportunity to expand once again, upping the original 5,000-square-foot store into a spacious 7,500-square-foot, two-story space.

The update wasn't just about updating the floorplan, however; instead Roberts decided to expand the store's offerings and tweak the name once again, streamlining it back to Elizabeth Anthony.

"What we found was that our customers, their daughters didn't want to come in because they had this idea that it was dated," said Roberts. "We do really well with women my age and my mother's age and we've mastered formalwear, but we want to appeal to the younger generation."

After a summer of renovation, Roberts and director of merchandising Jennifer Cunningham have filled the expanded space with ready-to-wear lines from Roland Mouret, Alberta Ferretti, Pamella Roland and Rena Lange. There's also a new fine jewelry section featuring the celestial designs of Andrea Fohrman, Kara Ross's unexpected treatments of gemstones and Chris Davies' strands of tiny gold beads inspired by Greco-Roman designs.
