Salmon with mushrooms and asparagus at La Balance.

The Cellar Door

Wine Bar
The Cellar Door is a wine bar first and foremost, and while it has an impressive menu—featuring fare such as meat and cheese plates, flatbread pizzas, and hummus—the stars here are the wines. Before 6 p.m., the place offers flights of three wines for just $3 with the purchase of a bottle; after 6, flights start at $10. It’s the perfect spot for a relaxing evening.

Doziers BBQ

Barbecue
Doziers may be a drive, but it’s well worth the trip. After all, original owner Ed Dozier won first place in the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Barbecue Cook- Off way back in 1957, and the current owners still follow his award-winning recipes, even making their own sausages. Argue with a local about the supremacy of Doziers at your own peril.

La Balance Cuisine

French
You don’t have to leave Katy to find French cuisine. La Balance executes the classics—think escargot, foie gras, steak tartare, and boeuf bourguignon—with a modern twist. With a nice selection of wines to complement the fare and platings that rival the fanciest restaurants in town, this quaint spot is perfect for date night.

Marini’s Empanada House

South American
What started as a small Neartown-house-turned-empanada-restaurant back in 1971 has since expanded to Katy, where the location is run by a son of the original mom-and-pop owners. One of the few places to find authentic, delicious empanadas in Houston, let alone Katy, Marini’s is as good as it gets for a quick lunch spot. Did we mention the empanadas, which come in more than three-dozen varieties, are under three bucks each?

Sapore Ristorante

Italian
Sapore has made a name for itself by sticking to traditional Italian classics such as chicken parmesan, osso buco, and fettuccine alfredo, but executing them well and getting the sauces right. It’s also home to a formidable collection of wines.

Texas Tradition

American, Burgers
Texas Tradition has made a name for itself among Katy locals, quite an honor considering how many burger-joint competitors it has. While the place does everything from sandwiches to seafood, the burgers are definitely the thing to get. We’re partial to the bacon cheddar cheeseburger with a side of onion rings, but really, you can’t go wrong.

Thee Trini Hut

Caribbean
There was a time we would have been surprised by a restaurant serving the cuisine of Trinidad and Tobago ending up in Katy, but that time is long over. The cuisine at Thee Trini Hut is always spot on—spicy and full of flavor. Among the delicious offerings are doubles, chicken or shrimp curry, saltfish, and pastelles.
