The Scotch eggs at Petrol Station may change your mind about pub grub.

In news that will shock absolutely no one, the $9 pub burger at Petrol Station continues to be one of the best burgers in town. "I didn't even think I was hungry," my father said, wiping crumbs off his beard—crumbs that had, until a few minutes prior, been an entire cheeseburger—after a late lunch last week. "But that was amazing. That meat—it was so perfect."

My dad the burger snob had even conceded to liking another of Petrol Station's specialties: Scotch eggs. I fully understand why most people dislike Scotch eggs; the egg itself is usually overcooked, and wrapped in bland sausage that's certainly not any better once deep fried. Not so at the craft beer bar in Oak Forest. Here, the eggs are barely soft boiled before being wrapped in savory sausage, battered, and fried. The result is something akin to The Rebel Within at famed San Francisco bakery Craftsmen & Wolves, where the egg yolk creates a rich sauce for the rest of the dish.

Would you expect the carefully plated dish of Scotch eggs above to come from a neighborhood beer bar? It almost pained me to wreck such a beauty. As partner and chef Darren Greenwood continues to improve upon the already amazing menu, I'm sure this won't be the last dish I'll photographing while my friends laugh at me over their beers—and then devouring after thorough documentation.
