Lots of kids dream of being a fashion designer, but few actually put in the nitty-gritty work that goes into making it a reality. Enter Fashion Camp Houston, the four-year-old brainchild of local stylist—and Houstonia profile subject—Dawn Bell.
“My favorite part of camp is seeing the campers engage with each activity. These kids are so creative and they bring so much of themselves into the projects,” said Bell. “It's very rewarding to see them learn about the industry that I love so much! It's also inspiring to see my colleagues give back by coming in and speaking to the campers.”
Part Project Runway, part professional training, 12 to 18 year olds spend five days immersed in the fashion industry, gaining experience in everything from illustration, design, and production to photography, art, and blogging. Experiences include a digital fashion illustration class taught by Jessica McMahon of HCC’s fashion program, a field trip (in a limo bus!!) to the Menil to tour an exhibit on Charles James, Q and A sessions with industry insiders, and an accessory project sponsored by Elaine Turner.
The camp runs from June 9 to 13 from 9 a.m. to noon. For more information, check out the Fashion Camp Houston Facebook page.
