As a new-ish mom (the baby boy is almost two. Am I still a newbie?), I love the idea of Houston Children Give Back. The founding moms wanted to help their children learn the importance of philanthropy and appreciate the needs of others, all while creating positive change in the world.
HCGB president Anika Jackson says, "We aim to create educational opportunities for children ... so they better understand real-world challenges and become inspired to affect change."
Although the organization also hosts kid-friendly events, this one was just for the mommas and their friends. Ladies who shopped the Elaine Turner store at the May 15 event received 10 percent off their purchase, and Elaine Turner donated 10 percent of the party proceeds to support the group, which is currently raising funds for charity:water. In fact, HCGB has already surpassed its goal of raising $10k for charity:water to build a water well in either Bangladesh or Kenya (wherever charity:water deems it's most needed).
