Hair took center stage on Saturday May 4th at the Bobbi Boss Live on Stage Tour. A sold-out crowd packed the Royal Sonesta Hotel’s Legends Ballroom to watch local salons battle it out for the title of “The Boss.” Houston stylists Dorothy Cook, Kim Aitch, Robert Young, Kay Simpson, and triplets Dedra Carpenter, Donna Brown, and Dadra Campbell received honors for their commitment to educating the public on the importance of self-respect. Starting, of course, with a great coif.

Salons like the 100-year-old Franklin Beauty School and the Regency Beauty Institute did not disappoint. Before a panel of judges, each contestant presented a runway show and dance routine featuring props, models, and singers that helped express the owner’s vision for hair as art. Lisa Jackson, known for her ground-breaking weaves, sent down the runway a Princess Padme-inspired look with a multi-layer white “do” that can only be compared to the artistic beauty of Bjork’s famous hair-centric onstage costumes. Think The Fifth Element meets Marie Antoinette meets Black Swan.

On the heels of H-town's national cultural renaissance, Houston was a natural fit to kick off producer Glynn Jackson's 5-city tour. Thanks in no small part to the city’s most beloved child, the city is ready to take its place as this country's cultural black capital.

Atlanta, you just got checked.
