There have been times in our history where even in America, home of the free and the bravely dressed, a more modest approach to clothing was the status quo. This is not that time. Designers are rushing to lose fabric and churning out numbers with cutouts, mesh overlays, and the like—case in point, the outfit Kate Hudson donned at the screening of her latest film Wish I Was Here or any outfit from this year’s BET Awards (literally, take your pick).

But not every cutout is created equal. We've pulled together a collection of our favorite cutouts. With so many different ways to flash flesh, it's easy to embrace this perfect-for-summer trend.

The Mesh Cutout

Mesh is a great way to dip your toe into the cutout trend. It's a cutout, but it covers. Plus, mesh can be edgy or sophisticated. Just like anything else in fashion, it's all in how you do it.

The Side Cutout

Side cutouts are chic and surprisingly easy to wear, especially since they can be found in tops, dresses, and comfy jumpsuits. An added plus is that they give an automatic synched waist bringing attention to your smallest part.

The Torso Cutout

The good new: the torso cutout is super cute. The bad new: you've got be pretty fit to pull it off.

The Bare Back

Looking for the most modest way to stay on-trend? The back cutout is for you. Pair it with a cute blazer to keep you for work, but, come five o'clock, lose the extra layer for a fun night out on the town.
