Sometimes it seems like everyone looks the same these days. Well, almost everyone. Like an exotic bird, Heather Petrey demands your attention, fluttering through town in her unusual ensembles bursting with pretty colors. The deft-eyed young stylist, blogger, and Lone Star Vintage owner seeks out the unique and the weird for herself and her second-hand shop. She chats with Houstonia about her avant-garde style, her aversion to trends, and why she wore a fascinator made of coat hangers to Fashion Houston.

What are you wearing?

Vintage St. John pants, Nine West heels, Stella & Dot necklace, and vintage bow, T-shirt, and purse.

Describe your style.

I can’t really describe it. It’s not something I’m going for—it’s just there. If I had to pin it down, I guess I’d say avant-garde. I mix vintage with whatever looks good, whatever strikes my mood. I strive to be unique and stand out. Especially when it comes to events—I’ve built up a reputation for going all out. People say, “What’s Heather going to wear tonight?” I want to live up to that.

What’s the most unique thing you have ever worn?

The wire hangers in my hair. That’s probably the weirdest thing. I figured “I’m going to Fashion Houston for the first time, and I want to stand out.” I thought—“Is this going to work? How can I get these to stay in? And I hope I don’t hurt or bump into people with the hangers!”

You seem to own a lot of unusual clothing and accessories. How do you find treasure at thrift stores and estate sales?

I search for anything that pops out. I’m looking for something that makes a statement. It has to be kitsch and unique and catch my eye.

Do you find yourself following trends?

I don’t really dress for the trends, but I do like the mixing-prints and jelly-sandal-platform trends. Other than that, I stick to whatever works for me. I try not to be a trend whore.

Any fashion pet peeves?

Oh yes! When you see someone wearing a tank top and you see their bra sticking out. Come on—that’s tacky. If you’re wearing a strapless piece and you still have a bra on with the straps showing? No. Just no.

Any tips for folks who want to stand out from the crowd?

Life is too short to be a robot and be like everyone else. It’s boring. Experiment and have fun with it.
