Sneakers are all over the runways this season. Celeb-loved designer Alexander Wang cited them as the overarching theme for his New York Fashion Week show, while  Harper's Bazaar calls them "sportive and trend-sconscious," adding they no longer need to be removed once one arrives to work. One fashion mag editor even went as far as naming white sneakers—think old-school Adidas Stan Smiths—as one of the musts of the season. And it was a  pretty short list. That's no small feat, considering all the trends out there.

Here's how to master the sportive look without looking like you just left the gym.

BUSINESS ON TOP, PARTY ON THE BOTTOM

Try pairing sneakers with loose-fitting trousers, a boxy, tailored top, and a boyfriend coat in a sporty color. The key for this business-appropriate look is to keep things sleek, simple, and classy.

Adidas Samoa shoes, $65; Topshop Fluffy Wool Blend Swing Coat, $178; Givenchy Small Pandora Pure bag, 2, $190; Maison Martin Margiela x H&M pants, (available in November); Pleated Poplin Top, $59.99; Dior Tee Shirt Earrings, Price upon request.

GIRLY WITH AN EDGE

A skirt pairs great with sneakers as long as it's not too short, at the risk of looking like a Spice Girl circa 1995. A below-the-knee pencil skirt reads "I'm in the biz," while a fuller skirt is definitely flirty.

Zara Denim Tube Skirt, $39.90; Reebok Freestyle Hi Vintage Inspired, $69.99; Nasty Gal Fast Track Tee, $58; River Island Black Stripe Paris boxy tshirt, $29; Alxander Wang Prisma Skeletal Backpack, $1,095; Beats by Dr. Dre Studio Headphones, $299.95.

Anthopologie Grass Lace Midi Skirt, $158;  Gucci Duilio Brogue leather Boston bag, 2, $450; Madewell Merino Fresh Powder Sweater, $99.99; Mickael Kors Skylar Black and Gold-Tone watch, $275.

FOR THE BOYS

GO AHEAD, TRY IT!

Wondering who had this crazy idea? You can thank Celine's Phoebe Philo, who has been wearing Adidas Stan Smiths with everything, forever. Karl Lagerfeld, ahem, also showed kicks with his own couture this season, proof that your weekend staple is now ready for the big time.
