Love Lies Bleeding
A few years ago, Elton John teamed up with Jean Grand-Maître, the innovative artistic director of the Alberta Ballet, to create a full-length dance performance inspired by John’s tumultuous life and set to his iconic music. The lavish show, which features 150 costumes and complex video projections, was a critical and popular success in Canada; thanks perhaps to John’s close friendship with Lynn Wyatt, the show will have its American debut right here in Houston.

My Life As A Doll
For the past 18 years, sculptor Tara Conley has been collecting phrases. Phrases she overhears at the supermarket, phrases people say when they’re talking to her, phrases plucked from the ambient chatter of daily life. She now has a collection of 900 such phrases, a collection she dips into when creating her multimedia works. For her new installation at the Houston Museum of African American Culture, Conley and writer Tria Wood took the concept one step further and based the entire work around a single phrase: “My Life As A Doll.” Beginning with that single phrase, Conley and Wood created an immersive, brightly colored installation at HMAAC featuring Conley’s sculptural assemblages and Wood’s poetic text. Tony Award–winning singer/actress/dancer Foster has starred in numerous Broadway hits, including Thoroughly Modern Millie, Anything Goes, and Shrek: The Musical. She brings her considerable talent to this concert with the Houston Symphony, under the baton of Steven Reineke.

The Magic Flute
Although originally intended as a work for children, Mozart’s great opera (actually a singspiel—a musical form combining singing and spoken dialogue) continues to delight people of all ages. Written in Mozart’s mother tongue of German at a time when nearly all opera was in Italian, The Magic Flute spins a gossamer-thin fairytale about a birdcatcher, a prince, and a sorcerer. This opera by contemporary American composer Thomas Pasatieri debuted at the Fort Worth Opera in 2007. Set in Amsterdam in 1938, it tells the story of a famous composer’s widow searching for another composer to complete her husband’s unfinished opera. Pasatieri, who has also scored numerous Hollywood films including The Shawshank Redemption and American Beauty, conjures a film noir atmosphere with his dark, brooding orchestration.
