I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the forecast calls for scattered showers all weekend, because apparently two wet weekends in a row just isn't enough. If you're like me, you've already checked all those 'someday' tasks off your to-do list—nothing says "let's finish hanging the wallpaper in the dining room" quite like a day stuck indoors—and you've seen all the movies you can stand. This weekend, kiss the couch good-bye, throw on your rain boots and get to shopping.
Design Antique Show Houston
If you missed the Round Top Antiques Weekend last month (or you're ready to go again), get in the spirit with DASH, a weekend-long antiques and housewares fair taking place all weekend long. The organizers have tented 17 acres of land at the corner of Gessner and I-10, and brought in 80 vendors from Houston and beyond. If the semi-outdoor setting isn't enough to conjure Round Top's fields of hidden treasures, the range of offerings will. High-end antiques mix with modern fixtures, art, textiles, jewelry, collectibles and whatever else shows up, at prices you usually have to drive a couple hours to find. "DASH has something for everyone,” says co-owner Vanessa Sendukas. "Our primary aesthetic is beautiful, affordable design.” Through Sunday, $10 admission, 1055 Gessner Rd., designantiqueshowhouston.com.
High Fashion Home Tent Sale
For design lovers, High Fashion Home's annual tent sale is pretty much legendary, because everything under the big top is a whopping 50 percent off, and with five floors of stock to clear out, there's plenty to choose from. If you can't make it to Midtown, you can still get in on the sale—there's a flash sale on the website all weekend, too. Through Sunday, 3100 Travis St., highfashionhome.com.
Rice Village Sample Sales/Happenings
Three of our favorite local, independent boutiques are combing forces to host their first-ever sidewalk sample sale on Sunday. Saint Cloud, Myth & Symbol and The Class Room will be offering special deals and discounts, with an appearance by roaming magazine bus/shop Tomo Mags and baked goods from Maple and Love. 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday at Saint Cloud, 5217 Kelvin St.
If you find yourself in the Village on Saturday instead, pop into Wildbloom boutique to meet fashion sketch artist Rongrong Devoe, who will be selling her work (which has been featured in Vogue, InStyle and WhoWhatWear) and creating personal sketches for a special shopping event dubbed "Stylishly Illustrated." 12-7 p.m. Saturday at Wildbloom, 2513 Rice Blvd.
13th Annual Houston Book Fair
If you're looking to explore a different kind of sale this weekend, head to the Houston Book Fair at the Printing Museum on Saturday, which offers deals on used books alongside rare, collectible tomes for sale from over 20 organizations and vendors. Also check out the demonstrations inside the museum's workshops on papermaking, letterpress printing, bookbinding and lithography, hear from local collectors on how they got started and get up to two of your own books appraised. $5 admission for non-members, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday at 1324 W Clay St., printingmuseum.org.
