Pizza and plant life.

Houston's first certified green restaurant, Ruggles Green is well known for its large menu of gluten-free and vegetarian options. Long before Houstonians went gaga over going green, the spot became a favorite for its support of local vendors and use of fresh, organic ingredients. Beyond the usual pizza and pasta, Ruggles invites diners to experience out-of-the-box farm-to-table options through a variety of hearty, vegetable-heavy dishes.

Because honey-fried goat cheese is the best way to eat goat cheese.

A recent rebranding of the Sugar Land Town Square location as Ruggles Green Bistro now means counter service by day and relaxed table service by night. The addition of a full bar in the main dining room allows guests to stick around and enjoy local beers and wines by the glass or bottle. As always, the patio is the ideal dining destination during one of Houston's many beautiful days.

On a recent visit to Sugar Land Town Square, I managed to try nearly all of the vegetarian dishes at Ruggles Green Bistro. Starters such as the veggie lettuce wraps, loaded with mushrooms, zucchini and organic quinoa, and the honey-fried goat cheese and arugula salad came piled high with a slew of colorful ingredients.

The much heartier veggie nut burger is made with a vegetable, potato and hemp protein patty that's sautéed, topped traditionally and placed on a whole-wheat bun. The burger comes with the option of quinoa side salad, which I strongly recommend instead of obvious fries.

The sweet quinoa salad and veggie nut burger are a perfect combo.

The super veggie tacos is reason for vegetarians to rejoicing on Taco Tuesday over a platter of three corn tortillas stuffed with black bean spread, grilled portobello mushrooms, corn salsa and fresh avocado. If you think you have "been there, eaten that" when it comes to vegetarian pasta, try the quinoa mac-and-cheese, crafted with three types of cheese and elbow pasta made from the protein-packed pseudocereal (remember: quinoa isn't a grain).

Ruggles Green Bistro offers its full menu for both lunch and dinner, with a handful of specials posted daily. For non-vegetarians, the Monday Burger & Beer Bash will get you a half-priced beef burger paired with a draft beer for an additional $3. Laid-Back Thursdays feature $7 glasses of wine, accompanied by live music on the patio, starting at 5 p.m. And for those with little tykes, the newest special welcomes kids to eat free on Sunday evenings with the purchase of an adult entrée.

As the concept at Town Square provides a more casual-chic dining experience, the beloved "green restaurant" continues to be one of the best places to enjoy locavore vegetarian cuisine in Houston.
