MARAVILLOSO 2015: The Water Festival
Discovery Green hosts a "contemporary circus and dance event" this weekend. Chanson d'Eau, an inspired piece of installation performance art created by Belgium's Yaso Romero Fernandes, will be performed locally in collaboration with Karen Stokes Dance—three dancers from the company will perform on glowing flowers floating on the lake. In addition, KSD will present a new performance, DRENCH.
June 5–6 at 8 p.m. Free. Discovery Green, 1500 McKinney Street. 713-400-7336. discoverygreen.com/circus
Morris, Welch & Kylián
This program features two world premieres: Stanton Welch's Zodiac, which tells a story based on the Greek astrological signs, and Mark Morris's The Letter V, which promises light-hearted fun. Rounding out the bill is Jirí Kylián’s modern work Svadebka. The music should provide something for everyone. Two pieces feature classic composers—Haydn (The Letter V) and Stravinsky (Svadebka)—and there's also a commissioned suite by composer Ross Edwards (Zodiac) featuring the Houston Chamber Choir.
Thru June 7. $20–170. Wortham Theater Center, 501 Texas Ave. 832-487-7000. houstonballet.org
Free Press Summer Fest
Does an event need more promotion than this one? Since the release of a controversial set list in February (see one R. Kelly), FPSF has been garnering more and more buzz. It wasn’t much of a surprise when the presale for the festival—also featuring shows by Tove Lo, Charli XCX, Skrillex, The Decemberists, Flogging Molly and many, many more—sold out in a record-breaking three hours. If you don’t already have tickets, then be ready to shell out a pretty penny, as general admission now runs a triple-digit price tag. Oh and note the change of venue, the result of the city's recent floods.
June 6–7 doors open at 11 a.m. $168.50–1,000. NRG Park Yellow Lot, 1 NRG Park. 832-667-1400. fpsf.com

Mack and Mabel
This 1974 Jerry Herman musical flop, set in the midst of Hollywood’s 1920s-era golden age and inspired by the real-life relationship between director Mack Sennett and actress Mabel Normand, has built a devoted cult following in the decades since. Credit a terrific score, one of the Hello, Dolly! composer’s finest.
