Thanks to our generous (and incredibly festive) partygoers at Houstonia's second annual Mint Juleps & Jodhpurs event, many of whom purchased raffle tickets for some seriously awesome prizes, our yearly Kentucky Derby viewing party was more than just the best-dressed affair in town on May 2. The event also raised $17,042.71 for the Holly Rose Ribbon Foundation. Houstonia publisher Diane Caplan presented the check to Dr. Franklin Rose and wife Cindi Harwood Rose, founders of the charity, earlier this week.
The Holly Rose Ribbon Foundation was established in 2005 to assist cancer survivors in receiving reconstructive surgery. While Dr. Rose himself is a noted plastic surgeon, it was the news that Cindi's sister, Holly Harwood Skolkin, had been diagnosed with breast cancer that prompted the couple to create a foundation that could use their talents to help others. Though Holly sadly lost her battle with breast cancer, the foundation named in her honor continues its mission today, most recently developing the Holly Rose Ribbon Foundation Scholarship Program. Through this program, the foundation will award scholarships to full-time University of Houston students who've lost a parent to breast cancer.
