There's very little that can't be accomplished at Double Trouble Caffeine & Cocktails, the tiki-themed spot in Midtown just steps away from the light rail on Main St., and one of the centerpieces of the so-called Mid-Main Island. Need a stiff drink? A stiff shot of espresso? Some combination thereof? Need a quiet place to read? A lively patio to enjoy with friends? A perch from which to listen to the barely-muffled sounds of the bands playing next door at the Continental Club without paying the cover? How about a fluffernutter from Fluff Bake Bar or a mocktail made with coconut LaCroix? A place to refuel and recharge after a long afternoon spent combing through old records at Sig's Lagoon or eccentric jewelry at My Flaming Heart? Double Trouble has all of those bases covered and then some.
This highly useful coffee bar/regular bar also offers an equally useful daily happy hour, from 4 to 8 p.m. on weekdays and noon to 4 p.m. on the weekends. While the coffee, unfortunately, isn't discounted during happy hour, several other things are: namely, all draft beers are $1 off (as of this week, that includes Southern Star Bombshell Blonde for $3 and Buffalo Bayou 1836 for $5); glasses of wine are $4; and highballs (think gin and tonic, Cuba Libres, Greyhounds and the like) are only $2.50, though with the caveat that they're made with well spirits. Regardless, Double Trouble doesn't carry junk in its well, and even if they did...the cocktails are only $2.50, which is cheaper than the crummy cocktails at my beloved Lone Star Saloon, which are made with crappy well liquor. (Side note for future discussion: When did Lone Star Saloon start selling its own branded t-shirts?)
Should you decide to branch out from the daily happy hour menu, I wholeheartedly recommend the cocktail seen above: the Captain's Orders, made with Old Overholt rye whiskey, allspice dram, dry vermouth, orange bitters and absinthe. It's one of Double Trouble's signature cocktails, which all go for $9 daily. Need something in between a $9 cocktail and a $2.50 cocktail? You'll love the $5 menu of "Old Stand-bys" including a Salty Dog (that's a Greyhound with a salted rim) and a tequila sunrise, for those days when you're feeling nostalgic about your old college drinking days but also don't want to order an amaretto sour. You've gotta draw the line somewhere.
