The first time I styled an outfit with espadrilles was nine years ago when British designer Luella Bartley did a Target collaboration. I bought two pieces from the collection, a white polo with a cherry on the left breast and a matching pleated skort that was filled with cherries and paired my outfit with red espadrilles that had pretty red and white striped ribbons. I looked forward to lacing up the ribbons around my ankles after morning swim practice; however, sunny days came and went as did my pretty red wedge espadrilles (sold to a neighbor at a garage sale).
Originally worn by peasants and soldiers, the rope-soled shoe was worn in France and Spain as early as the 13th century. Today, haute couture houses such as Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana and Valentino have incorporated these comfortable and chic shoes into their collections. Think black and white flats with interlocking Cs, jewels and lace.
Often called the “unofficial shoe of summer,” espadrilles can be worn all day and for any occasion from the office to a pool party and brunch. Pair this summer staple with a shirt dress, your favorite tee and shorts or a pair of skinny jeans.
