The key to incorporating fall fashions in August? Focus on light layers.

School is back in session, students are settling in and lazy days at the beach are a thing of the past. That can only mean one thing—fall is coming. Whether you're still lusting over the Autumn/Winter 2015 collections that hit the runways six months ago or just picking up on fall trends for the first time, it's not too soon to start incorporating crisp autumn pieces into your late-summer looks.

“With all of my favorite stores bringing out their new fall collections, it’s hard not to want to take part in the fun—even if it is still very warm outside,” says Alice Kerley, who runs the lifestyle blog The Lone Star Looking Glass.

Kerley appreciates layering and has found herself wearing her favorite Payton Anorak Vest from Francesca’s with dresses or tanks and jeans. “I think that layering with summer weight pieces, especially a lighter weight vest like my green anorak, is key when dressing for fall in a warmer climate.”

The recently opened Topshop in The Galleria is a favorite spot for Kerley as she enjoys searching for summer pieces in darker hues that can easily transition her into the season ahead.

“I purchased a high-neck sleeveless black dress from Topshop. ... The high neckline makes it great for fall, while the lack of sleeves is perfect for hot and humid Houston,” she says. Once the weather changes she's planning on pairing it with plaid scarves and riding boots.

Boutiques like Hemline are making way for fall arrivals, plotting their perfect fall outfits on Instagram featuring everything from Sam Edelman suede booties to comfy flannel button-downs.

From Alexander Wang to Balmain, velvet is another popular fall staple that was a big hit on the A/W 2015 runways. This woven tufted fabric is way too hot to wear as clothing at this time of year in Houston, but consider velvet shoes and accessories that can be incorporated into your wardrobe.
