Each Friday, Gastronaut rounds up the most notable opening and closing of the week.
You'd be forgiven for thinking that Around the Corner is, well, just around the corner from Down the Street (hang on—I promise this isn't an Abbott and Costello routine), seeing as how Around the Corner is the newest bar from the group that runs the popular, cleverly named Timbergrove bar (Down the Street, that is). But it's not. Instead, Around the Corner is quite literally situated right around the corner from 8th Wonder Brewery in EaDo, a fact which is likely convenient for both parties, as the bar is hosting a grand opening this weekend complete with pints of 8th Wonder's new Pharmhouse ale (an agave saison, if you're so inclined).
In addition to fresh kegs of Pharmhouse at the opening weekend, look for Karbach's perennial favorite Krunkin Pumpkin, a seasonal fall brew that's Houstonia's personal pumpkin favorite. Going forward, expect Around the Corner to stock the same sort of small, well-curated selection of interesting wines, craft beers and fun cocktails (look out for the blood orange margarita with Campari) as Down the Street is known for. These similarities aside, Around the Corner is carving out its own niche in EaDo with a smashing downtown view from its patio. No word yet on whether or not it will serve food, though you can always head Down the Street for its excellent duck pizza and weekend brunches. In the meantime, Around the Corner will be open Thursdays through Sundays starting at 4 p.m. at 1510 Hutchins St., with extended hours still to come.
Elsewhere in EaDo, a hardware store has almost completed its transformation into an icehouse-cum-dog park. East End Hardware originally opened in 2012 as, you guessed it, a hardware store. But this summer, its owners began the process of converting it into a business that would serve the community in a different way: by offering them a place to relax with a cold beer while their dogs run [gently] amok. Basically, if you've been missing The Boneyard since it closed last year, East End Hardware could be just the spot you've been looking for.
For now, the dog park is open at 3005 Leeland St. on select Fridays—we suggest monitoring East End Hardware's Twitter account for more info on upcoming dates as well as information about its impending grand opening.
