It’s time again for 18 of Houston’s finest chefs to sharpen their knives and get their Top Chef on for the 4th annual Go Pig or Go Home! cook-off. On Sunday, September 20, a slew of chefs will show off their gastronomic prowess to see who can prepare the best suckling pig. Hey, just because summer is coming to a close, doesn’t mean we can’t still enjoy some smoky, spit-roasted eats. We are in Texas, after all.
This year, the big players from the city’s best eateries, including Randy Rucker from Bramble, Omar Pereney from Peska Seafood Culture and William Wright from Helen Greek Food & Wine, will compete against one another at EaDo's own 8th Wonder Brewery. Lucky attendees will not only be able to sample the delicious grub from the line-up of participating chefs, they’ll also get to wash down the delicious food with 8th Wonder’s signature craft beers, including its newest release: Pharmhouse, an agave saison (yes, you heard that right).
"We are very excited to bring this awesome local event to the ever-expanding 8th Wonder Brewery," says co-owner Ryan Soroka. "The brewery itself is poised for more growth, as we are adding an additional 5,000 square feet of warehouse space to help create a new and improved tasting area, as well as a new outdoor venue adjacent to the brewery. We love being part of the community in Houston, and this is just one more way we can be involved and give back."
Previous years’ winners include Gabe Medina from Soma Sushi and Max Pellegrino from Max’s Wine Dive. And although an expert panel of judges will ultimately decide who made the best suckling pig of the day, there will also be a People’s Choice category, meaning you can still have your say on the dishes you love.
Not only is the cook-off a way to bring everyone together for great food, but Go Pig or Go Home! will also support a wonderful cause that is truly helping the community. A portion of the event’s proceeds will go towards OpHeart, a Houston non-profit organization that provides 3D prints of infants’ hearts to doctors before they perform surgery on their young patients.
With more than 700 hungry Houstonians expected to attend, the event will likely sell out as quickly as it has in previous years—so foodies jonesin’ for suckling pig should buy their tickets soon. Until then, may the best chef win. And most importantly, may they not have to pack their knives up and go.
Go Pig or Go Home! Sunday, Sept. 20, 4 - 7 p.m., 8th Wonder Brewery, 2202 Dallas St. Tickets: $88 at gopigorgohome.com
