Fair or not, vegetarians have a reputation for being whiny. And when it comes to dining at a sushi restaurant, the complaints are usually earned. But Ka Sushi in the Heights manages to avoid that stigma with a large menu of vegetarian-friendly options.
The trendy but casual eatery offers diners a diverse menu of meatless starters, grilled plates, noodle bowls and sushi rolls. The pickled okra served with miso cream sauce is not only a generous portion with large sized pieces, but packs a memorably tangy bite. Other tasty meat-free appetizers include shishito peppers, served grilled with a soy glaze and sesame seeds, and miso eggplant medallions, a steal for only $5. Among hot entrées, there's mushroom risotto prepared with short grain rice, shiitakes, dashi and Parmesan. The hot rocks, intended mostly for cooking seafood or wagyu, can also be utilized to grill up an assortment of mushrooms.
But vegetarians on the hunt for sushi will be pleased with those options, too. Opt for the full-flavored sweet potato roll made with crispy sweet potato, red cabbage and ginger-apple slaw or an order of eggplant nigiri.
Make sure to save room for dessert. The mochi sampler changes its flavors regularly, with a current roster that includes peppermint, chocolate and vanilla bean mochi.
