After three years of leading fitness classes in parks, garages and everywhere else, Yoga Athletex opens its first brick-and-mortar location in January.

Three years after teaching their first yoga class in a garage, sisters and native Houstonians Patricia Bomar and Kalynn Evans of Yoga Athletex (or YAX) are set to open their dream fitness facility in Spring Branch in January. After getting their start through social media and simple word-of-mouth marketing, they began to offer mobile wellness workshops and pop-up classes around Houston. Partnerships with local Crossfit gyms, schools, fitness retail stores, and youth sports clubs soon followed, and has helped the YAX program gain momentum.

The primary Yoga Athletex workout philosophy is “to keep athletes moving, regardless of their limitations, with responsive programming based in yoga, sports performance training and mindfulness.” Many of the training plans Bomar and Evans have crafted are based on their own experience dealing with lasting injuries stemming from the rigors of playing multiple youth sports.

Due to the rehabilitation benefits they found through functional fitness and yoga, they became passionate about helping other athletes achieve peak performance while staying injury-free. “We are here because we love to play sports and we want all athletes to be healthy enough to continue to play their sport for as long as possible,” says Bomar.

While yoga is an important part of their program, it is hardly the only focus. YAX takes a holistic approach to building better athletes by not only helping them train hard, but also by emphasizing functional form and adequate recovery. In fact, their signature “YAX Class” starts with a high-intensity workout and ends on the yoga mat with therapeutic poses. In addition to the group classes and custom training programs, the new gym will also offer seven-point Functional Movement Screenings (FMS) to identify any asymmetries or movement limitations in an individual’s body. “Basically, we are a one-stop shop. Train in our gym and restore in our yoga studio,” Bomar explains.

Yoga Athletex opens in January 2017 at 10510 Westview Drive in Spring Branch. The gym will feature locker rooms, group exercise facilities, and plenty of parking. Grand opening memberships are available through Jan. 1.
