So, your family is here, and you need something to entertain them for part of an afternoon, preferably something that's free. So what do you do? First you go to Discovery Green, obviously. But after that, treat the family to an outing at River Oaks District.
The new luxury shopping center is certainly a mecca for the 1 percent, with stores like Dior, Hermès, Cartier and Harry Winston taking up much of the real estate, but that doesn't mean it's only accessible for those who can drop five figures on a Christmas present. Through Christmas Eve, the center is offering complimentary carriage rides around the center (which, to be honest, is not all that far) that include free hot cocoa, roasted chestnuts and live music, plus views of all those luxury holiday window displays.
Plus riders can hop off and shop, so feel free to pop in to stores like Diptyque, COS, L'Occitane, NARS, Jo Malone, or Bonobos for lots of gift options under $100, or hit up John Hardy, Dolce & Gabbana or Giuseppe Zanotti if you're feeling extra generous (the carriage rides do have that effect). Finish off the outing with burgers from Hopdoddy or splurge on premium tickets to Rogue One at iPic.
The carriage rides run daily this week 4- 7 p.m., and Saturday 1-4 p.m., though they are best enjoyed after sunset to get the full effect of the window displays. Dressing like the world's fanciest elves (pictured above) is awesome but not required.
