Southwest's flight deals include a short non-stop flight to Liberia, Costa Rica and the beaches of the Nicoya Peninsula.

Southwest Airlines is offering an end-of-year flight sale with fares starting at $59, but you have to book by December 29 to grab those deals while they last. A few caveats first:

  • Deals on domestic travel are valid January 10, 2017 through May 24, 2017. Travel to/from San Juan, Puerto Rico is valid January 17, 2017 through March 2, 2017 and April 18, 2017 through May 18, 2017.
  • Deals on international travel are valid January 10, 2017 through March 2, 2017 and April 18, 2017 through May 18, 2017.

And one final caveat emptor: Not all of these deals beat those you could get on other airlines sans sales fares.

For instance, that $199 one-way fare to New York's LaGuardia is more expensive than the $297 round-trip non-stop fare on United or Delta (though, of course, you'll have to factor in conveniences like checking bags; Southwest allows two checked bags for free, while United and Delta each charge $25 for your first checked bag and $35 for your second).

That said, there are good deals to be found, in particular the non-stop flights to Oakland, California ($160 each way to, essentially, San Francisco), Liberia, Costa Rica ($145 each way to the prettiest part of the Central American paradise), and Mexico City (a fantastic $96 each way to the surprisingly neighborhood-y megalopolis).
