Three generations of Wexlers in front of the store on Main Street.

Technically, Dan Wexler isn't 100 percent sure that his family business, Wexler Jewelry, is the oldest independent jeweler in town. But he thinks so, and as it first opened in 1919 on Prairie Street in downtown Houston, it seems a likely candidate. Wexler told HBJ it's probably one of the oldest in all of Texas.

Not for long, though. As the Houston Business Journal first reported, Wexler will close the family business after 97 years at the end of the year, citing his age, the changing business climate and an expiring lease in the River Oaks Plaza shopping center, at the corner of West Gray and Dunlavy in Montrose.

As HBJ notes, Wexler has been in the family business for over 50 years and is the third generation to run the store, which was founded by his grandparents after his grandfather immigrated to Houston from Poland. He tells HBJ he is considering working as a consultant in his retirement.
