Sometimes a shopping experience is only as good as the shopgirl. In a worst case scenario, she's faking enthusiasm for whatever you put on in the hopes of a sale, but most of the time she can act as a critical third party who can read your style and your shape and find something in store that will be a perfect fit.
But what if this member of your shopping squad was a professional stylist, who could weigh in confidently on trends from the runways, how to put outfits together and what pieces are going to work with your body? That would basically be shopping heaven. That's also what's happening all week at Laboratoria, where stylist Lisa Powers is holding a "takeover" inside the high-fashion boutique.
"I met [Laboratoria owner] Tatiana [Massey] over a year ago, and have been shopping here and bringing clients here for a while. We've been wanting to collaborate for a long time, and this seemed like good place to start," says Powers. "What I'm offering by being here is benefit of a stylist at no charge. I'll do a body type analysis and a mini-consultation on what's best suited for a customer's body type with a little cheat sheet to take home. It's a really personalized shopping experience, so customers can walk away little more knowledge about themselves."
Powers will be calling the Upper Kirby shop home starting today through Saturday, so anyone can drop in to check out the new resort and spring collections—not to mention the stocked sale selection—but she recommends making an appointment to be sure of getting her one-on-one attention. Fashion lovers can also follow her takeover all week on Facebook, where she'll be posting outfits she's put together as style inspiration.
Among Powers' favorite brands on the shelves at Laboratoria are Preen by Thornton Bregazzi out of London, N21 by Alessandro Dell Aqua and Australia's Ellery.
"Those are my favorite, and what fit me—I'm petite and kind of curvy," says Powers. "There's also a lot of great off-duty looks for spring, go-to stuff for when you want to look cute picking up the kids from school or running to the grocery store."
The Lisa Powers x Laboratoria takeover starts Monday and continues through Saturday. Laboratoria is located at 2803 Westheimer Rd., 832-407-2832, laboratoria-shop.com.
