What do you get when you mix an actress, a blogger, a WNBA star and an entrepreneur together? If you're Neiman Marcus, you get one kick-ass fashion panel with a quartet of truly inspiring women divulging all their fabulous fashion secrets. The A-listers who presided over the CUSP fashion show at Neiman Marcus in the Houston Galleria included actress Laura Bell Bundy from Anger Management and Hairspray, A Piece of Toast blogger Molly Bernadette Miller, WNBA player Skylar Diggins and Kate Cutler, the founder of BKR glass water bottles.
The evening started with a runway show featuring Neal Hamil models showing off the latest CUSP spring fashions, including wide-leg jeans with embroidery and ornate beading, bright bags for spring to add a pop of color to your outfit and lots of lace. Next came the fun when Houston Tidbits founder Allison Bagley moderated the fashion panel. The ladies talked about their favorite looks of the season, their can’t-live-without pieces and go-to handbags, fashion advice and top style icons.
Lace yourself, ladies
When asked what their favorite trend of the season was, every panelist proclaimed it was lace! Lace is the classic, ultra feminine piece you can easily add to your wardrobe. Mix a lace blouse with leather pants to balance the edgy look with something softer, or combine two trends into one with an off the shoulder lace top. But remember, there’s a tactful way to wear lace.
“I love lace, but a modern take on lace. I think lace can go bad kind of fast, so you have to be careful,” Cutler said.
The classic blazer
What’s the one style piece you'll wear forever? According to Miller, it's the perfect blazer—her favorite is a black version by Veronica Beard. “Blazers can take you from jeans and a t-shirt, to a little black dress, to a spring wedding,” she says. “I’ve been wearing it for years and years and it’s definitely going to be around for a long time.”
Navy is the new black
While the color black will always be in style—and, let’s face it, it goes with everything—we can sometimes get into a color rut when it comes to our beloved go-to hue. This spring, try a new color when picking out your next fashion accessory. “For my birthday, I bought myself a navy Prada bag, which I’m toting around everywhere I go,” says Cutler. “I love navy because I think it’s kind of fresh and different. I always buy black so that was a big branching out for me.”
Confidence is key
When you think of iconic fashions donned by Hollywood elite or royalty, what comes to mind? Maybe Kate Middleton’s beautiful wedding gown with the lace? Or are you still wondering how the green Versace dress Jennifer Lopez wore to the Grammy Awards in 2000 managed to keep everything covered? For Diggins it’s not so much about what you’re wearing, but how you’re wearing it.
“I love Zendaya, I think that she can rock everything and I love her confidence,” she says. “Also, I would have to say Lupita Nyong’o and her Oscars [outfit] when she won. I thought her whole look was stunning.”
When in doubt, dress like the it girls.
We can’t all be supermodels like Gigi Hadid or Kendall Jenner, but we can dress like the cool girls they are. “I’m definitely falling prey to wanting to wear what all the it-girl models are wearing,” says Miller. “I want to copy and paste usually everything Gigi wears onto my body. Same with Kendall Jenner, and any of those young cool girls. I think they are doing a really great job of keeping things classic, interesting and current, all while letting their personality come through.”
If some of the more contemporary pieces that these young models wear are scaring you away, fear not. When in doubt, vintage will never not be cool. “I’m a big fan of vintage clothing,” says Bundy. “If I were thinking of a style icon, it would be like a Marilyn Monroe or a Bettie Page. I would say the person that best emulates that for me is Betsey Johnson. I am a big fan of a lot of the things carried in her line.”
