The end of oyster season is nigh. We're plowing headfirst into May, the first month without an "R" in it, but old wives' tales aside, the Texas commercial oyster season runs from November 1 through April 30. And for the first time, San Leon—home to legendary Gulf oyster institutions such as Gilhooley's and Misho's Oyster Co.—is hosting a festival to celebrate.

The inaugural Oyster Fest takes place this Saturday, April 30 from noon to 7 p.m. in the field next to another iconic San Leon seafood spot: Topwater Grill (815 Avenue O). Just in case you didn't get your fill this season, the San Leon Oyster Fest is here for you, offering all-you-can-eat oysters—sustainably managed, wild-caught, Gulf oysters—with each $20 admission ticket. Additional food will be for sale throughout the event, but why? Who cares? HERE ARE ALL THE OYSTERS YOU CAN EAT.

Not an oyster-eater? Discounted admission tickets are available for $10, which includes access to the rest of the day's events: a swimsuit contest, live music, an oyster-shucking contest, and two cook-offs, one for amateurs and one for restaurant professionals. Children 12 years and under get in for free along with an adult, and a kid's zone with face painting, a moon walk and more will be available to keep them occupied while you stuff the hollow space between your soft palate and cheeks with every oyster you see.

Don't let a single oyster go to waste, my fellow Houstonians. There is no more righteous and honorable tribute to the end of oyster season than this.
