The undercut—also known as the Skrillex haircut—doesn't seem to be dying out any time soon. Even celebrities like Demi Lovato, Gina Rodriguez of Jane the Virgin and Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones) are rocking it. Whether it's shaved on the side, the back or both, it's the easiest way to look like a badass. And depending on how you wear it, it can easily be hidden around your more conservative coworkers.

It's especially popular in pixie circles, which is what led me to try an undercut as a change of pace from my normal hairstyle. As I've written before, sometimes wearing your hair this short can get boring over time and you're forced to be creative with color (gray!) and shape. Sometimes, shaving it outright seems like the answer. In this case, I was browsing Instagram and saw that my stylist had recently done an undercut on one of his regulars. She looked 10 times cooler than me and I loved that she had lines shaved in and that the undercut went all around the sides and back of her head. Her hair was longer on top and worn slicked back.

"I should do that!" I thought to myself. But I had to do it in a way that suited me and my style. I've done the shaved lines in my head thing before and it's cool. Very cool.  But it's not me. And my hair wasn't long enough to wear slicked back. I decided to consult with Keelan, my stylist, and see what we could work out together. We decided that shaving the sides and back would do the trick. And as for the top, I could wear it long (for a pixie) and keep it versatile enough to wear to the front, back or parted to the side.

The first thing he did was pull out the clippers and warn me that he was going to shave part of my head. I braced myself and let it happen. Hair grows out anyways, right? Right. So I let it happen. He shaved the bottom half of my head into a sort of fade and shaped the top into the style we decided on. I ended up looking pretty cool and edgy, but still like myself.

Added bonus: With the Houston humidity, my hair took on a life of its own and the top would sometimes curl into a sort of pompadour. So I advise any ladies (or gents) out there to shave part of their head at least once in their life. It's fun and freeing and with the Houston summer approaching nothing could be both literally and figuratively cooler.
