The convention district upgrade, with the addition of thousand-room Marriott Marquis and several new restaurants, aims to create density and a more walkable downtown environment.

The complete list of new restaurants going in as part of the convention district's facelift has been released, and 10 new concepts of various styles will be added to the new Marriott Marquis and the surrounding Avenida de las Americas later this fall.

Inside the new 1,000-room Marriott Marquis—which boasts a Texas-shaped lazy river we can't wait to ride—are six new concepts. The most exciting might be Xochi, helmed by Hugo Ortega and his team, which will "spread its wings" with a creative menu that won't helm as tightly to Ortega's traditional Mexican roots. The Xochi space will overlook Discovery Green and include private rooms.

Also inside the new hotel will be its signature restaurant, B&B—not to be confused with B&B Butchers—serving "Texas countryside-inspired fare with a healthy twist." Sports bar and grill Biggio's will also be in the hotel along with terrace-level HighDive, which will serve New American dishes al fresco by the pool. Rounding out the list is wine bar Cueva, offering 200 different wines, 20 of which will be on tap.

Along the newly revamped facade of the George R. Brown Convention Center, options are a little safer: There'll be another of Tilman Fertitta's Grotto concepts; a Bud's Pitmaster BBQ, which will be built next to its own smokehouse; and a McAlister's Deli. On the ground level of the new office building next door, which will be the new home of the Greater Houston Partnership, will be Kulture, with dishes representing the "diaspora from the continent of Africa through the Caribbean to the southern U.S."

The Marriott Marquis — and many of the restaurants inside it — are slated to open in late November. Xochi is shooting for a December opening, and the restaurants along Avenida de las Americas aim to be up and running by the 2017 Super Bowl.
