Today, Bon Appétit announced the 50 nominees for its “Hot 10: America’s Best New Restaurants 2016” and Houston's own Foreign Correspondents has made the list. The farm-to-table Northern Thai restaurant from chefs PJ and Apple Stoops has been a favorite among diners since opening in the Heights in October of 2015. Before opening his restaurant, Stoops was Houston’s go-to fishmonger specializing in Gulf Coast bycatch. After living in Thailand (where he and his wife met) and studying the food, he knew Houston would be ripe to try Thai food that veered off the pad Thai and drunken noodles path. And he was right, as accolades have been pouring in ever since.
The list of nominees was compiled by Bon Appétit’s deputy editor Andrew Knowlton and senior editor, Julia Kramer, who travelled across the country, dining in over 400 restaurants in search of the nominees. “They define the way we eat in 2016,” says Knowlton (yeah, sounds tough to us, too). “Julia and I searched for one-of-a-kind places that can’t be replicated,” Knowlton says. “We love restaurants that are driven by passionate people with distinct points of view. These places aren’t cookie-cutter. They’re absolutely authentic to the cities where they’re based. We want to recognize restaurants that showcase hard work, genuine hospitality, and delicious food.”
So once again a Houston restaurant and chef has achieved national prominence, and rightfully so. Even more proof that we can stand right beside the other big “food cities” across the country. Congratulations to Chef Stoops and their staff for being nominated. The top 10 will be revealed in the magazine’s upcoming September issue and live on bonappetit.com on August 16th.
