One of the worst parts of adulting is watching costumed kids stroll down your block on Halloween, knowing that after the walk of solicitation those smug masqueraders are going home with a sack full of sweets that will last them well into December. (Or, if they are anything like I was, Election Day.) Maybe one day adult trick-or-treating will catch on, but until then, I will content myself with some some of the seasonal treats floating around Houston this Halloween. Some are kid-friendly and others not so much. After all, why should they get to have all the fun?
Take no shame in renting that shaggy blue Cookie Monster costume. Put it to good use by showing up to the SMOOSH Cookies truck at Rice Village from 1-8 p.m. on October 31 and your ice cream sandwich is only $1 (regularly $3.75). OK, you don’t have to dress up as Cookie Monster. All costumed folk get the Halloween discount. A scoop of vanilla ice cream wedged between two chocolate chip cookies will make you forget that you’re too old to trick-or-treat. An extra 50 cents will buy a topping like M&Ms or Nerds and make it feel more like you got this treasure at your neighbor’s door.
Peruse Blonde Biscotti’s pop-up pumpkin patch before crunching into a candy corn biscotto. Yellow, orange and white chocolate bind crushed candy corn to a sweet vanilla biscotto, making for a novelty that even the candy corn-weary can appreciate. Take your treat to go and pair it with the Basic Witch Latte at Nourish Juice & Smoothie Bar. Their wryly named take on the PSL is anything but ordinary. A double-whammy for anyone in need of a jolt, the Basic Witch Latte delivers a kick of caffeine from Zeppelin coffee and a punch of power from raw turmeric, which colors the drink a delightful yellow-orange. With ingredients like organic maple syrup, pink Himalayan sea salt and house-made almond milk, you can convince yourself that this treat is more health drink than dessert.
Pumpkin carving isn’t the only Halloween craft. At Steel City Pops in the Heights, you can trick out your frozen treat with a Halloween popsicle decorating kit, which includes white and milk chocolates in mini pastry bags and a pair of edible eyes. Try it out on their pop of the month: pumpkin pie drizzled with caramel and covered with graham crackers. While you’re in the neighborhood, grab lunch at Lee’s Fried Chicken & Donuts and snag one of pastry manager Lillie Allen’s Halloween donuts. Her Mexican chocolate spiderweb donut spins cinnamon and chili powder into a chocolate frosting atop a yeast donut.
This year Halloween is on a Tuesday, which means Tuesday Thai Curry at Doshi House, where barista Cory Toatley will be pouring his signature hot pumpkin cider made from from organic pumpkins, Mexican cinnamon and Madagascar vanilla. For dessert, please your palate with their vegan almond buttercream-frosted pumpkin pie cupcakes and seasonal caramel apple latte.
Though not technically on Halloween, the Pumpkinator Special Vertical Tasting is going down at Saint Arnold’s Brewery on Sunday, October 29. Taste your way through a time warp by sampling the Saint Arnold playbook of fall’s most popular adult beverage. For $20, guests get a five-ounce commemorative taster glass and their pick of four pours from a list of Saint Arnold pumpkin beers, including ten brews from 2011-2016 and the newborn 2017 Pumpkinator.
