When completed, the Spring Creek Greenway between The Woodlands and Kingwood will span 33 miles and 12,000 acres, making it the longest contiguous urban forested corridor in the nation. Right now, the greenway runs along either side of Spring Creek, with a dozen preserves home to owls, ospreys, bald eagles, grey foxes, beavers, and all manner of snakes, shorebirds and fish that share space with the hundreds of thousands of Houstonians who also live nearby. And currently, the greenway is 80 percent complete—which is where you come in.

This Saturday, May 6, you can help the Bayou Land Conservancy construct the Spring Creek Nature Trail. The 11-mile trail will be the fourth for the Spring Creek Greenway, spanning both Harris and Montgomery Counties. The trail broke ground in March in the George Mitchell Nature Preserve in the Village of Creekside Park, and will require teams of volunteers to work throughout the year to complete its pathway in time for its 2018 grand opening.

Volunteers will meet at 26400 Kuykendahl Road on Saturday at 8:30 a.m., where a carpool will take them to the under-construction Spring Creek Nature Trail. Once there, expect to walk roughly four to five miles over the course of the morning's trailbuilding activities.

Due to the strenuous nature of such activities, volunteers need to be at least 14 years old (and will, of course, want to bring water and bug spray). The morning's work will conclude at 11:30 a.m., just in time for lunch at one of our favorite spots in the city—which also happens to be in the same strip center where you'll meet for the carpool: Levure Bakery & Patisserie. We can't think of a more well-deserved croissant sandwich and/or chocolate eclair.

Sign up to volunteer online, or visit Bayou Land Conservancy to find out more information. And if you can't make it this Saturday, there's another trailbuilding day coming up on June 10.
