Bourbon Peach Smash

Seasons 52—so called because its core menu rotates every season and its features change every week—recently debuted its summer menu. But food isn't the only thing that transforms regularly at the chain: The latest cocktail menu comprises some Bourbon-based fruity cocktails, including a twist on a classic. I recently went by the restaurant to sample some of the new menu items, both on the food and cocktail sides. (The lobster flatbread, salmon with corn risotto and short ribs with cheese grits were highlights on the edible side.)

My first cocktail was the Bourbon Peach Smash, just reintroduced to the menu the day I was there. It was quite light and refreshing. The peach isn’t very prominent, the mint in the drink is probably the stronger flavor, but they combine well to make the drink feel lighter than a Bourbon drink normally would.

My dining companion tried the New Old Fashioned—which came with a fun little presentation as the final liquor was poured over the ingredients at the table. (Make sure you stir it after this, or you’ll get a lot of Bourbon on that first sip.) Once we mixed the ingredients with the sugar stick garnishing the drink, it proved to be a good balance between the whiskey and the cherry flavors.

Bourbon Berry Bramble

The third Bourbon-and-fruit cocktail offered was the Bourbon Berry Bramble, which I quite liked. It's sweet and berry-flavored, as one would expect, but with enough Bourbon in it to balance the sweetness and keep the drink from becoming too cloying. Though it's not a Bourbon cocktail, my companion ordered a Mango-Jalapeño Crush. I have to mention it because it’s a great example of how to use spice in a cocktail: subtle throughout, with enough of a hint of heat at the end to intrigue the palate and make the imbiber want another sip.

The intent of Seasons 52’s concept and rotational menu is to always have the freshest ingredients on hand, and that certainly shows in the quality of the items. While the menu changes constantly, I imagine that if they do everything as well when you visit as they did when I did, you’ll have a fine time here.
