Melodrama Boutique owner Jackie Adams's degree is in physics. After learning this about her, I’m not surprised in the slightest that she chose to study matter and its behavior through space and time. Her knowledge of these ephemeral concepts is what has made Melodrama such a pitch-perfect purveyor of globally modern clothing for almost 15 years.
“My customers have grown with me,” says Adams, resplendent in a squid ink black dress with cutouts in all the right places to accentuate her curves. “They’re professional women, they love to travel, and they have an enormous shoe collection. They also want something that they can keep in their closet for more than a season.”
With a deft eye for the juxtaposition of contemporary and classic, Adams selects each piece for Melodrama with balance in mind. What each piece in the shop has in common is a bold element that pops out at you—maybe it's a full skirt in a vibrant tropical print, a simple black sheath with a cascading collar of feathers, or simply a well-cut pair of wide-leg trousers in a golden mustard hue. With Melodrama one of the few local retailers that carry stylish plus-size options, there are truly pieces for every woman and every occasion here, not to mention a small array of thoughtfully curated statement jewelry and shoes to finish off an outfit. All suggest an owner with confidence in her own taste.
“My secret is that I don’t only shop for things that I like; I shop for my customers,” Adams says. “I want each of my products to be in your closet for the next 10 years.”
The shop, located on a bustling stretch of Almeda Road where Midtown meets the Third Ward, is small and eclectic but it has a home-y feel—Adams partners with not only local designers but also community and non-profit groups for regular events; she wants it to be regarded as not just a store but a community and social gathering spot.
As Adams says, “There should be a story to tell in your closet.” This is the boutique where they begin.
