Even after 11 years, is it possible Sushi Miyagi is still a hidden gem?

At the deepest crevice of Bellaire Boulevard, often overlooked by zooming cars, is this strip mall spot yelling a bold and simple “Sushi.” For more than a decade it has invited intrigued customers to a Narnia of authentic Japanese delicacies—and yes, it continues to feel like opening a magical wardrobe.

If you haven’t yet been, know that it’s a quaint 20-seater that’s open noon-6 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday and 2-6 p.m. Friday. Also, there are two employees: the married Mr. and Mrs. Miyagi. Mr. Miyagi carefully executes sushi creations behind the bar while his wife, Mrs. Miyagi, literally runs the rest of the restaurant. From the moment you walk through the door until you close out your tab, Mrs. Miyagi will be the one to service you with a grin.

It’s not a secret the wait for your food is an anxiety-filled time-lapse, but you will remember why the drive and wait are all worth it as soon as you make the first attack on your overstuffed maki. Quality takes time, but no matter the crowd size, all the elements for a memorable sushi experience are delivered when you dine with the Miyagis.

Sushi here is always served fresh, from generously cut sashimi pieces to deliciously rolled crispy spicy tuna maki, to the beloved spicy salmon salad. Almost all nigiri pieces are made ready to eat without all that extra fancy schmancy dipping sauce; Mr. Miyagi ensures the perfect amount of wasabi tucked between the fresh fish and the sushi rice to give you an authentic Japanese sushi experience.

Having a business held up by only two people can be a challenge, but the couple avoids overworking by operating odd business hours. Catching a meal here can be an inconvenience, but new and frequent customers manage to figure out ways to work around their schedule to get Houston’s best sushi fix. Now it’s your turn. What are you waiting for?
