Ah, yes, the American tradition of stuffing yourself silly then piling in the car to blow a paycheck—Black Friday 2018 is upon us. And, as we all know, the biggest shopping day of the year has morphed into an entire shopping weekend (and beyond) with additional days like Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday. Last year, 174 million Americans shopped on Thanksgiving weekend and spent an average of $335 per person, deluging the retail industry with billions in sales.

While the thought of bracing crowds and bum-rushing the mall to save a few bucks is nightmare-inducing for some, it's thrilling and, in some cases, an actual holiday tradition for others. We expressly condemn the bum-rushing, of course, but if you're game for a Black Friday adventure, we're here to help.

Of course, shopping from the comfort of your couch in a tryptophan coma is convenient, but allow us to mount our soapbox for a moment and urge you to venture out IRL. An influx of dollars can do wonders to support the many local stores working tirelessly to buck the troubling trend of unsustainable brick-and-mortars, and let's face it, ordering an item that fits you like it looks in the picture is almost as elusive as a winning lottery ticket. Try it on. Bring a friend. Embrace the madness. Then maybe have a drink.

To sweeten the deal, most local stores are offering some sort of specials for Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and even "Self Care Sunday," something we'll all need this year. Of course, it's virtually impossible to compile an exhaustive list of all the participating businesses in Houston, but here's a decent starting point to reference when making your plan of attack. Saving some money, getting your gifts, and helping your favorite shops keep their doors open? We'll call that a win-win-win.
