Siblings Nick Adair and Katie Adair Banhart of Adair Concepts (Adair Kitchen, Eloise Nichols, Bebidas) named their newest concept, Betsy's at Evelyn's Park, after their mother. She's taking it in stride.

"She's loving it," said Katie, who added she walks and runs the trails nearby.

Betsy is probably one of the target customers of the restaurant, which is set in the yellow house that once held The Ivy & James. Nick and Katie hope the walkers and runners, lunch daters, and parents with hungry children all find their new spot the perfect companion to a day at the park.

"We really tried to lend the whole menu to going out in the park," said Nick. "Eventually we want to add picnic baskets and things like that, that are really just things people can enjoy in the park."

Those picnic baskets will be filled with salads, burgers and sandwiches, charcuterie and light bites, and pizza. The menu, which Katie said was created with feasibility and convenience in mind, reflects simplicity done with fresh ingredients. A lunch-worthy pesto rice bowl has Brussels sprouts, sautéd mushrooms, and feta, packing a hearty and healthy punch. A pretty decent park burger has shredded lettuce, tomato, mayo, and mustard inside pillowy brioche.

But our recommendation is to order a pizza. The Californian has sun-dried tomatoes, spinach, mushrooms, and feta. All the ingredients work well together, but the star just may be the crispy yet fluffy, buttery crust. The slices are pretty small, easy to share with the kids or a friend.

Betsy's is also doing breakfast, featuring solid, manageable bites like avocado toast, steel-cut oats, yogurt and berries, and breakfast tacos. Smoothies include the pretty awesome-sounding Dude (with banana, almond milk, almond butter, cold brew, date, and chocolate protein). While the restaurant isn't yet serving alcohol, it'll soon be offering beer, wine, sangria, and frosé. And you can also get coffee, via the Adairs' own roaster, Rightside.

Seating roughly 15 inside but a whole lot more on its expansive garden area, Betsy's could be booming when the park is buzzing. Also, prices are more affordable than the Ivy & James, which also helps.

That's all good news for Nick and Katie, who are just starting a pretty busy year. Sometime early in 2019 they'll announce a new concept next to Adair Kitchen, and later that year a downtown concept should also come to light. 

As for Betsy's, it's open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. Who knows, maybe you'll see Betsy herself walking on by, or—considering the family's history in the Houston restaurant business—even providing input on recipes.
