Houston sneakerheads have much to celebrate this holiday season as more local personalities get into the shoe game. Foot Locker and Nike have tapped rapper and producer Maxo Kream and Astros’ pitcher Dallas Keuchel to promote the new Home and Away Collection, this month’s two-part drop of celebrated shoes to recognize the “vibrant sneaker community” of Houston, Atlanta, and Miami. The “Home” packs dropped December 6 in each city’s respective markets only, while the “Away” shoes will launch in select stores and online on December 22.
The collection includes two exclusive “Home” and “Away” colorways for the Nike Air Max 95 (Houston), Air Force 1 Hi (Atlanta), Air Force Low (Atlanta), and Air Max Plus/97 (Miami). New cities and silhouettes will be introduced in 2019, Foot Locker says.
Maxo Kream promotes H-Town’s Home version, a white and grey colorway with vivid purple accents and the “HOU” letters that retails for $170. In a Foot Locker video filmed around Houston, the native rapper briefly discusses his pride for Clutch City. “Houston’s got like a breath of fresh air. There’s all kinds of sounds,” he says. “I’ll always be loyal to Houston because it’s where I’m from.”
And while we’re sure Dallas Keuchel, who promotes Houston’s “Away” silhouette, will always be loyal to the H at heart, it’s looking like he’ll wear another team’s jersey sooner rather than later. Regardless, the free agent’s contributions to our historic World Series win are commemorated in a black Air Max with contrasting white sole, yellow laces, and fiery detailing.
And, okay, we’re probably a little biased, but we’re pretty sure Houston got the best revival out of this collection with the Air Max. The classic sneaker is so much more than just a running shoe—it was the chosen footwear for rappers and ballers alike in the ‘90s and, as its reference in dozens of iconic lyrics suggests, a cultural touchpoint of the hip-hop movement—something Houston knows just a little about.
