Heads up, y'all: the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center will institute paid parking as of early 2019. But before you give up on ever seeing your pal the Arborgator again, there is a positive benefit to paying the $1 per hour ($5 max per day) fee at the parking meters going in as we speak: The revenue will all go directly back to the Arboretum, which operates as a nonprofit and doesn’t receive any tax dollars to help, meaning it needs those extra bucks to fund its incredible restoration efforts and educational programming.
More good news: entry to the Nature Center and trails will remain free and open to the public. Plus, Arboretum members (you can join for $40) will get free parking. There will also be free parking every Thursday throughout the year.
The Arboretum currently has 282 parking spaces in its lot at 4501 Woodway Drive on the western edge of Memorial Park. The new meters will accept credit cards, or you can use the ParkMobile app. More information is available at houstonarboretum.org.
