Bosscat Kitchen & Libations is growing. The popular whiskey bar and new American concept will open a second location in District West, a mixed-use development in Richmond by Ferguson Family Partners, according to an announcement Wednesday. It's slated to open in fall 2020.
But that isn't all.
"We're constantly looking to grow," said John Reed, co-founder and co-owner of Bosscat, along with Leslie Nguyen and Vinnie Capizzi. He says beyond the Richmond location, there could be at least one more Bosscat coming to the Houston area in the near future.
"As far out as The Woodlands. We're taking some temperatures out there for what's a good opportunity for us," Reed said, also noting his team has looked at Sugar Land's Town Center but is still scouting.
As for the Richmond location, it will mark the third Houston spot for Bosscat, the first at 4310 Westheimer and the second named BCK Kitchen & Cocktail Adventures at 933 Studewood. The menus focus on comfort food like pork chop sandwiches, shrimp and grits, brick chicken, and an event-like brunch with a live DJ and offerings like Fruity Pebbles French toast and a donut burger. Its impressive collection of whiskeys can be enjoyed at the Westheimer location's whiskey room.
Reed said the Richmond location, which will be 5,000 square feet and have both an indoor dining room and outdoor patio with enclosed roof (and bars in both places), will keep the same Bosscat menu and whiskey room. Look for darker wood and interior hues.
But why the Katy/Richmond corridor?
"I've only been here for two-and-a-half years, and my time here has taught me two things. First, couples in their mid-to-late 30s with families have moved to Katy, and they're still expecting that inner-loop experience," Reed said. His No. 2 lesson was finding that Houstonians "stay kind of within their (geographical) pockets for the most part." That means adding more Bosscats makes sense.
"The city has let us reinvent ourselves, and so it makes sense to continue in Houston," he added. "People have been so receptive (to menu changes, to new ideas). I've fallen in love with the city."
You can bet on potentially more concepts from the Bosscat team, too. Reed said he'd like to bring his sushi-focused Ten Asian Bistro to the city by 2020, as well.
District West, which is opening in phases, is a 100-acre development with 45,000 square feet of greenspace. The first tenant to open will be Star Cinema Grill, scheduled for March, while an array of retail, restaurants, entertainment options, offices, and medical facilities will join.
