Talk about the incredible, edible egg. When I was a young’un, the most exciting thing I could hope to find in my Easter basket would be a Russell Stover solid chocolate bunny or a coconut cream egg, nothing even approaching what Macarons is vending this year.
La Table’s on-site bakery is currently selling absolutely adorable over-sized chocolate eggs as well as chocolate critters cast in-house from decadent Valrhona chocolate. Created by pastry chef Otto Sanchez, the confections range in price from $35-60 depending on the size and are available in white, dark, or milk chocolate. As of this past weekend customers no longer need to pre-order these treats and can simply pick them up at the bakery.
It should be noted that all of these “critters” are of the pastoral variety (bunnies, chicks, lambs) save one species: the penguin. Remember, it’s still Easter in the South Pole. It should also be noted that the chocolate penguins are wearing hats, because why not?
Some damn lucky kids are going to have quite the lovely surprise on Easter morning. Or a 36-year-old woman who will buy expensive candy designed for children without compunction.
Grown-ups seeking more savory oeuf options from La Table should make reservations at Château for their “Grand Brunch.” Diners can enjoy either a seated family-style breakfast of orange brioche French toast, scrambled eggs, pancakes, bacon, sausage, and other goodies—or belly up to the buffet, whose offerings include a raw bar (shrimp cocktail, ceviche), a carving station (roast leg of lamb, beef tenderloin), and a chocolate fountain with plenty of fresh fruit and pastries for dipping. There will even be madeleines on hand should your perfect Easter involve a Proustian moment.
Greeting the guests will be everyone's favorite pasqual mascot, the Easter Bunny, whose publicist has assured he will be available for photographs.
