Long before Hurricane Harvey ever formed and made its presence known here in Houston, there were people living in this community struggling with hunger. The storm only exacerbated this issue, which is why the work that the Houston Food Bank does is more important than ever. As you’ve likely learned in the 10 years since the Food Bank merged with End Hunger Network, $1 can provide the equivalent of three meals to someone in the community that needs food. With a goal of distributing 100 million meals this year, it’s going to take quite a bit of cash for the Houston Food Bank to get there.

This morning, getting there got $25,000 closer, thanks to the people at Spec’s Wines, Spirits and Finer Foods and Diageo, the multinational alcoholic beverages company behind such brands as Smirnoff, Johnnie Walker and, most important to today’s news, Crown Royal. Recently, the two companies teamed up for a promotion, the Spec’s Crown Royal Hand Selected Barrel Program, that saw the two donate $1 to the Houston Food Bank for every bottle of Crown Royal Hand Selected Barrel sold. If you’ve bought a bottle of Crown Royal Hand Selected Barrel recently, good job on doing your part to help fight hunger in Houston.

Members of the Houston Food Bank on hand for the check presentation were all smiles, but also focused on the mission. That $25,000 translates to 75,000 meals, they reminded us, which means 75,000 of our friends and neighbors getting a necessary meal. There’s still a lot of 2018 to go, however, and if you’re in the giving spirit there are plenty of ways you can help the Houston Food Bank complete their mission. Head over to their website to find out how you can donate your money, food or time to the cause.
