I’ve always been a firm believer that if your product is good, people will find you. On Monday, this belief was reinforced when I made the drive over to Pappy’s Cafe's new location at 12313 Katy Freeway. How new is this location? So new that Google Maps still thinks they’re at their old location. So new that as I headed toward the door I saw the sign displaying to the world that it is, in fact, Pappy’s sitting in the parking lot.
So new that at lunch they were handing out their “soft opening” menu. I looked over it, seeing some familiar Texas comfort food options, but was told by my waitress that they had most of the old menu ready to be served—I just needed to ask if there was something I was looking for. The only they thing didn’t have at the start of the week was chicken fried steak because their delivery guy hadn’t been by with what they needed for it. A crushing blow for a CFS fan such as myself, but when in doubt chicken tenders make an excellent delivery method for country gravy.
The new location feels less cramped than the old one. A former Texas Land & Cattle, it’s a spot that Pappy’s was uniquely situated to take over, what with their own love of the Lone Star State. Inside there’s plenty of rustic charm, although I look forward to a few years down the line when it has that lived-in feeling that made their old home such a refreshing change of pace from the legions of local places rocking the “look at our weird lights and concrete” look.
The food was as good as I remembered, the chicken well fried, the mac 'n' cheese a solid level of creaminess, and the gravy has just the right thickness. Simple, sure, but a set of items that chains drop the ball on all the time. Pappy’s knows what it’s doing in the kitchen, even on down to the simplest of items.
No word on a more official grand opening yet, but if you were a regular at the old location, you’ll feel right at home in no time. That is, of course, if you haven’t already dropped in; judging by the lunch crowd, the new location wasn’t exactly a secret. If you haven’t checked them out in the past, now might be the time to go, before the sign is up and all the booths are full. It won’t be long now.
